CASE STUDY
Decatur Army National Guard
The Need
The Decatur Army National Guard sought new insulation for a hanger, which housed $50 million worth of helicopters and equipment. The existing blanket insulation was not functioning to the level they needed. They sought a solution that could be applied quickly while also maintaining the facility’s cleanliness. Given the military setting, stringent background checks were required.
The Goley Solution
This project required a responsive, meticulous team who could swiftly respond to the security demands and constraints of the facility. When bidding, our estimators strategized on how Goley would make any necessary special arrangements to accommodate certain scenarios (for example, swift clean-up of the facility if a helicopter needed to be stored unexpectedly).
Our crews applied sprayed closed cell foam with an intumescent coating to the inside of the helicopter hanger. In order to do this, our crew had to apply the product 30 feet up in the air, using a mechanical lift. Additionally, we installed fiberglass roll material, padding, and steel banding on the underside of the roof deck, complementing the finished white foam wall. This ensured the proper insulation and sealing while creating a clean and aesthetic finish.
“Goley had the required knowledge, expertise, crews, and coordination abilities to complete this project in a timely fashion. They were able to work with the owner and architect to come up with a finished product that would meet the design requirements and current code. Additional efforts were also required while working inside an active military facility to coordinate with relocating aircraft and equipment in phases to complete the work.”

The Result
Goley was able to successfully meet the demanding timeline with the proper products. This was a highly sensitive environment, both from a security and application standpoint. Continuity was also a major factor; only the same crewmembers were expected on the job. Our installers were punctual, professional and clean on the jobsite. The customer reports being satisfied with how the insulation helped to improve the indoor environment and overall aesthetics of the facility.
