Winter may be over but it will be back . . . .

Did your winter heating bills have you and your thermostat down? I know it did for me and I have a well-insulated home. There are many factors that affect your home’s performance with two key factors being insulation and air sealing. I was in a 1970’s home last week that had plaster and was very well built but with little to no insulation such as below. I did a blower door test and the house was very tight. While explaining to the homeowner the results and solutions, I explained to them the difference between air sealing and insulation is this; you put a windbreaker on in 30 degree weather and go outside and are cold because while the wind is off you there is no insulation to keep your heat in. If you had put on grandma’s hand knit sweater and gone out, you would have insulation but the wind cuts right through it still leaving you cold. In their case, the home had the windbreaker, so we just need to add the sweater to keep the heat in (or out as summer approaches). Don’t forget you can reap the benefits year round!!
