5 Easy Home Energy Saving Tips for the Holidays

holiday energy saving tips

Even though we don’t think about it much, good insulation is one of the main reasons a house remains comfortable in the winter…or not. Insulating your home is also one of the best ways to conserve energy around the house during this holiday season (and year-round). Since we all could do more to lower our energy bills around this time of year, here are few holiday savings tips:

#1 Lower Your Thermostat For Parties

When cleaning up your house prior to entertaining guests, lower the thermostat by a few degrees. This way you’re not sweating while you’re cleaning up and when your guests arrive and after they’re there, all of their body heat will fill the room and keep it warm.

#2 Have A Fully-Stocked Freezer

When getting your freezer ready for your holiday party, the fuller the better. Your freezer will run more efficiently since there are more frozen goods and layers to keep the air cold inside. The same idea holds true with insulation. The more layers to trap cold or hot air between you and the exterior of your home, the better.

#3 Let Your Leftovers Cool

Let your leftovers cool before putting them in the refrigerator. It’s smart to do this so that your refrigerator doesn’t have to work overtime to get everything cold. Plus, this will make the refrigerator warmer, which makes for a more comfortable environment for bacteria.

#4 Hand Clean Your Oven

Letting your oven self clean makes your life a little easier, but the energy it takes to clean it will certainly add up on your energy bill. So take the time to scrub your oven and save a little money in the process.

#5 Get Plenty Of Rest

Don’t forget about your energy! It’s hard to fight the “go, go, go” mentality of the holidays, but Thanksgiving is just the start. Do yourself a favor and get plenty of rest so that you can make it through the marathon holiday season this year.

And of course, don’t forget to re-think your home’s insulation!
