Green Building

Why is it so confusing?

With all the different buzz surrounding what green means, it’s no wonder why any consumer would be confused. So, what does green building mean and how can it be done? Let us show you.

At Goley, our part of the green building mission is energy conservation. Properly insulating and air sealing your home can reduce energy use and increase energy efficiency. Properly insulating your home can help do both.

Improve Energy Efficiency

Insulation improves any buildings energy efficiency by keeping the heated or cooled air inside. Heaters and air conditioners that run constantly use a huge amount of energy that not only affects your pocketbook, but also the environment. With the proper level of insulation in your attic, walls, and throughout your home or building, conditioned air will stay where it is needed, inside the structure. With an additional air seal, air infiltration is drastically reduced, complimenting insulation efforts to decrease energy consumption.

What about the environmental impact?

Being energy smart has huge advantages for everyone. By properly insulating and air sealing, nonrenewable energy sources are conserved. The benefits of energy conservation are far reaching. Decreased dependence on foreign oil and lower greenhouse gas emissions are only two advantages.

How Green are the products?

We know that insulation helps conserve energy, but what about the insulation products themselves? The primary raw material used to make fiberglass insulation is sand, which is a rapidly renewable resource. Additionally, Certainteed’s fiberglass insulation products average 35% recycled glass content. Sustainability is key.

Icynene® spray foam does not contain synthetic blowing agents, which have very high Global Warming Potential. Icynene® does not lose r-value over time provides longevity and can potentially eliminate the need for the installation/re-installation of additional material in the future.
Cellulose is made from approx. 80% recycled newspaper.

Increased durability = energy savings

Increasing the durability of a structure reduces the need for additional material to be used later. By using vapor barriers, (such as Membrain Smart Vapor Retarder), or spray foam insulation, walls are protected from moisture which reduces mold, thus protecting building materials and reducing the need for replacement in the future.

Green = Green

Saving energy saves you money. The investment you make by properly insulating and air sealing will be evident in your energy bill. Invest in your comfort and the environment. The returns are tremendous.

Goley Insulation is a proud member of the HBA Green Building Council and has participated in the construction of LEED, GBI, and Energy Star certified homes whose primary focus is energy conservation and sustainability.
